Boogie in the Bazaar by Maunders: Lesson Ideas
Boogie in the Bazaar for Double Bass (Grade 5) – Florence Anna Maunders
Meet Malachy Robinson! He's the Principal Double Bassist with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, teaches on the MA Classical String Performance at the University of Limerick and is a member of the string faculty at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
This piece has a very exotic flavour, like an Eastern Bazaar. The student will develop an intuitive feel for the 8/8 bars, every second one grouped into 3+3+2. Harmonically, the piece uses the notes of the harmonic minor scale, but with the 5th as the tonic. This is well established from the start so once the student gets familiar with the mode, it should flow enjoyably and give them a great sense of exploring a new idiom. It would be very useful for the student to listen to some Arabic, Turkish or Iranian folk music.
