Completion requirements

Joyce has completed their Beginner Songwriting Portfolio.

Task 1: React

For this task, Joyce has chosen Astro Splash as their stimuli.

ABRSM Teacher Hub · ABRSM Songwriting Entry Level React Astrosplash

Choose your stimulus:
I chose Astro Splash because I liked the idea of drinks and how I could incorporate
everyday sounds into music.
Describe the idea:
I want to use an energetic melody accompanied by body percussion and everyday sounds
such as a can being opened. Using everyday sounds means that my dynamic choices are
limited but with the body percussion we have more freedom.
Turn the idea into music:
I want the song to begin and with a single loop so it has a cyclic structure. Body percussion
will ground the piece on rhythm and give it elements of fizz. We will convey the ideas of
space through the lyrics.
Appraise your music:
The loops worked well but they could be more in time so you get the full effect. It fulfils
the brief but the melody could be more energetic.

Astro Splash Lyrics
Astro splash soda pop my favourite drink
With pineapple flavouring, what do you think?
When I’m roaming through the galaxies soda pop in hand
I savour every sip of it my favourite fizzy can

Task 2: Inspire

For this task, Joyce has chosen Accompaniment and A catchy idea that repeats (hook) from the Creative Toolkit to include in their piece.

Choose your idea:
My idea is having a fun time. I chose this because I wanted to write a song about having a
good time.
Describe your idea:
I want the lyrics to be someone talking to another person about how they should meet up
and have a fun time together. It might be hard to vary the lyrics if I continually repeat the
same line but the repetition can be affective if used correctly.
Turn the idea into music:
I will ask my friends to come to the park in the lyrics. I will use energetic rhythms in the
vocals to make it sound fun. It will start and finish with the same lyric.
Appraise your music:
I think the chords and the choice of instrument worked well. I think I could have used more
variation in the lyrics.
Good Times Lyrics
Come and see me and we’ll have good times yeah
We can go to the park have good times yeah
We can sing all together have good times yeah
Come and see me and we’ll have good times yeah
