Developing an understanding of music theory is a vital part of the musical journey. Learning to read what’s in a score and how music is notated and ‘put together’ helps musicians at all levels to perform with sensitivity, awareness and control. It is the way that the composer communicates their ideas the page and has kept music alive from previous ages alive for us today.

Music theory is the ‘master code' behind all music performance. It is an amazing system of symbols and words which have been refined and perfected over many centuries. By understanding music theory, a musician knows not only which melody notes to play and in what rhythm, but at which tempo, volume, duration, tone. An understanding of the underlying harmonic foundation becomes clearer, awareness of phrasing, shaping, musical direction and flow becomes more purposeful and the character and style of a piece of music is established.

Our Music Theory Grades assess this knowledge of how music works. They are designed to support learners at every stage of the musical journey and cover the essential building blocks of music. There are 7 questions covered in each grade: Rhythm, Pitch, Keys and Scales, Intervals, Terms and Signs, and Music in Context. The detail broadly reflect those included in the performed exam pieces, and therefore enhance musical appreciation and understanding through the levels.

By discovering how to interpret the details of the score for themselves, learners of any age become independent musicians, noticing for themselves how the music is assembled and structured.

  • Theory Grades 1-5 can be taken online at any time via your personal laptop or computer. Watch our short videos on starting and taking the exam, and use our practice resources or take our practice exam to see how much you know before you book the exam.
  • Theory Grades 6-8 are paper-based exams which focus on aspects of harmony, counterpoint and composition of western music. The exams take place at specified venues on set dates across the year. See our website for more information on how to book.
  • Practise papers and workbooks are available from our shop. 

Our music exams are graded to match the performance levels Grades 1-8. You do not have to take the theory exams at each level, but if you're taking a Practical or Performance Grade 6, 7 or 8, you must pass Grade 5 or above in Music Theory before you book your exam. This is to make sure that you have the understanding you need to interpret and perform music at these higher grades. We also accept Grade 5 in Practical Musicianship or a Grade 5 Jazz Practical Grade.
